Creating pathways

How to build a guided learning experience for your reps

Overview

Learning pathways bring courses, playbooks, library content, tutors, and roleplays together into one guided experience for your learners. They’re a great way to run onboarding programs, demo certifications, and more. This article walks you through creating a pathway, adding steps and items, and publishing it.

Pro tip: before building pathways, make sure you have learning materials (playbooks, course, tutor, roleplay, or content) already created.

Creating a New Pathway

Step 1: Click Learning in the left nav, then click Admin in the top right.

Step 2: In Learning admin, select Pathways.

Step 3: Click New pathway in the top right.

Step 4: Click the pencil icon next to Untitled pathway to give your pathway a name.

New pathways are saved as a Draft until you publish them, so you can build at your own pace.

Adding Steps and Items

Pathways are organized into steps (for example, Week 1 and Week 2), and each step holds one or more items for the learner to complete.

First, you can choose if you want to require the learner to complete the steps in order by selecting the toggle:

Then, create the steps:

Step 1: On the Steps tab, click Add step, then click Untitled step to name it.

Step 2: Click Add item and choose one of the following:

  • Add learning material: select existing Dock content to add to the step

  • Add learner task: create a task for the learner to complete, like reviewing call recordings with their manager

Step 3: Repeat for each step in your pathway.

Adding Learning Material

When you select Add learning material, the Add item window opens.

Step 1: Under TYPE, choose the kind of content you want to add.

Step 2: Check the box next to each item you want to include. Use the search bar to find content quickly.

Step 3: Click Add to step.

Roleplays

Items that are already in the pathway appear checked and grayed out.

Adding a Learner Task

Learner tasks are great for activities that happen outside of Dock content, like shadowing a call or meeting with a manager.

Step 1: Select Add learner task and give the task a title.

Step 2: In the LEARNER TASK panel, click Add action to attach something the learner will need. You can choose from:

  • Link, Video, Calendar, PDF, Library, Embed Anything, Embed Code, or File download

Organizing Your Pathway

  • Reorder steps or items by dragging the handle on the left.

  • Remove an item by clicking the trash icon on the right.

  • Manage a step by clicking the ⋯ menu next to it.

  • Require order by turning on Complete steps in order at the top of the Steps tab. Learners will need to finish each step before moving on to the next.

💡 Pair learning with practice. For example, follow a product course with a tutor session to check understanding, then a roleplay so reps can apply what they learned in a realistic conversation.

Adding a Certification

Reward learners with a certification when they complete the pathway.

Step 1: Open the Certification tab.

Step 2: Click Add Certification, then choose Existing one or From scratch.

Previewing and Publishing

Step 1: Click Preview as learner in the top right to see the pathway exactly as your learners will. You’ll see their progress tracker, each step, and a Start button for every item.

Step 2: When everything looks good, click Publish. The button will change to Published, and the pathway’s status will update on the Pathways page.

💡 Always preview before publishing. It’s the quickest way to catch an item in the wrong step or a step that should be locked in order.
